ABSTRACT

Abstract This article analyzes healthy child contests as a medical and socio-political strategy implemented in Latin America to protect childhood, thus ensuring the future of the "race" and the nation. These contests blended degeneration, racial theories, and state interventionism and gained momentum in the 1930s with the rise of eugenics. This article examines the contest in Colombia, which was implemented under the Liberal Republic (1930-1946); even though this competition was defined by its national context, a broader international perspective improves understanding. Questions are also raised about the efforts of the Liberal government to strengthen the idea of national identity through education and health programs.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the reference ranges of peripheral white blood cells (WBC) and five classification parame‐ters among 13 442 apparently healthy children to provide reference for clinical diagnosis .Methods A total of 13 442 apparently healthy children aged from 1 month old to 5 years undergoing the health physical examination in the healthcare department of the Guangzhou Municipal Women and Children Medical Center were chosen according to the healthy children screening standard and the exclusion standard of hematological diseases ,infection diseases and drug administration history .The WBC analysis and its parame‐ters detection were performed by using the Sysmex XS‐800i automatic blood cell analyzer .Results WBC and its five classification parameters were not accorded with the normally distribution .By the Mann‐whitney test ,no statistically significant differences in WBC ,BASO# and NEU # were detected between different genders of children (P> 0 .05) ,while the differences in LYM # , MONO# and EOS# had statistical significance(P<0 .001) ,in which the LYM # level in females was significantly higher than that in males ,while the MONO# and EOS# levels in females were lower than those in males ;By the Kruskal‐Wallis test ,WBC and five classification parameters had statistically significant differences among different age groups (P<0 .001) .The parameters of WBC ,LYM # ,MONO# and EOS# were decreased with age increase ,while NEU # was constantly increased with age increase and BASO# was decreased with age increase before 4 years old .Conclusion All factors such as gender ,age should be The inde‐pendent reference rangesl of WBC parameters among children aged from 1 month old to 7 years old should be formulated on the ba‐sis of fully considering the factors such as gender ,age .

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the development and interaction of left and right ventricular function in healthy children using tissue Doppler imaging. Methods Healthy children aged 0-15 years and adolescents were recruited, then children were divided into 6 groups:0-1 year,> 1-3 years,> 3-6 years,> 6-9 years,> 9-12 years,> 12-15 years.Healthy adolescents aged > 15-25 years were also recruited.Every subject underwent echocardiography including cardiac dimension measurements,atrio-ventricular valvular velocity and early-diastolic flow velocity(E)/late-diastolic flow evlocity(A) ratio measured by pulsed color Doppler,atrio-ventricular annular myocardial velocity (including systolic velocity (s),early diastolic velocity (e) and late diastolic velocity (a)),time intervals (including isovolumic contraction time, ejection time and isovolumic relaxation time),isovolumic acceleration (ⅣA) and Tei index measured by tissue Doppler imaging. Results were compared among different groups, the correlations with age and other factors were explored.Furthermore, comparison was done between left and right ventricular functional parameters. Results Left ventricular Tei index and isovolumic contraction time were significantly lower during puberty. From infancy to pre-school stage, left ventricular E/A (flow velocity) and e/a(tissue velocity) increased accordingly, then presented with no significant changes among the following age groups(P > 0.05).There were no significant differences in right ventricular Tei index,ⅣA,E/A (flow velocity) and e/a (tissue velocity) among the 6 groups (P > 0.05).Left ventricular systolic myocardial velocity (s) and ⅣA were significantly lower than right ventricle (all P < 0.001).However,left ventricular E/e(flow velocity) and e/a(tissue velocity) were significantly greater than right ventricle (all P <0.001).Conclusions In healthy children, left ventricular systolic function enhances during puberty, diastolic function increases from infancy to pre-school stage, then keeps stable till adolescents.Right ventricular systolic and diastolic function present with no significant changes during growth.Left ventricular diastolic function is greater than right one, however, right ventricular longitudinal systolic function is greater than left one.

ABSTRACT

We report a rare case of septic arthritis in a healthy child caused by Salmonella enteritidis. No predisposing factor was detected. Salmonella enteritidis was isolated from the infected joint tissue obtained following surgical drainage. Based on the culture and sensitivity report, he was treated with a 6-week course of antibiotic. He improved dramatically without any detrimental sequelae at end of one year.

ABSTRACT

Actinomycosis is a chronic suppurative and granulomatous bacterial infection most commonly presenting as an abscess, soft tissue swelling, or mass in the cervicofacial region. Although the organisms often invade soft tissues through damaged oral mucosa, actinomycosis presenting acutely as a superficial oral ulcer is extremely rare. We report a case of actinomycosis in a 6-year-old boy who presented a painful ulcer on the right buccal mucosa. Histopathologic examination showed sulfur granules and granulation tissue with mixed inflammatory infiltrate in the dermis. The granules contained numerous Gram-positive filamentous organisms consistent with actinomycosis. We propose that actinomycosis should be kept in mind in the diagnosis of oral ulcerations.

ABSTRACT

Listeriosis in a healthy child is extremely rare. A previously healthy 9-year-old male was admitted with pyrexia, headache and lethargy. The CSF cultures, taken on admission and on the 5th day, showed growth of Listeria monocytogenes. L. monocytogenes was identified by various methods, including polymerase chain reaction(PCR). Serologically, it showed type 1/2a. However, blood cultures, which were taken on the same days, revealed no growth of L. monocytogenes. Ceftriaxone and amikacin had no effect on the progress of the disease. The combination of ampicillin plus gentamicin, which is regarded as the treatment of choice for L. monocytogenes infection, had an effect in this case. Patient showed severe neurological symptoms and signs, such as diplopia, esotropia, nystagmus, ptosis and other meningeal signs during the hospital days, even though all such symptoms and signs were improved at discharge. We report the case with brief review of related literatures.
